Regulations are evolving and becoming more complex, and customs teams are not growing at the same pace. This is a job of expertise but also a job of volume. An effort that each declarer must make individually, often in parallel with their operational tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Add to this the personal legal responsibility that rests on each signed declaration and the picture is complete: the declarer&#8217;s profession has never been so demanding.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_we_mean_by_%E2%80%9Caugmented_customs%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>What we mean by &#8220;augmented customs&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Augmented customs is neither a product nor a technology. <strong>It&#8217;s an approach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The idea is simple: artificial intelligence tools assist the professional with low value-added tasks, extract data from a document, suggest a tariff classification, detect an anomaly in a flow, allowing them to focus on what truly requires their expertise: decision-making, control, and customer relations. Judgement, for cases that fall outside the standard framework.<\/p>\n<p>The founding principle is summed up in one sentence: <strong>AI augments the declarer, it does not replace them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not a slogan. It is a guiding principle that conditions everything else. The way tools are designed, the role assigned to them, and above all, the limits imposed on them. In a profession where legal responsibility is personal and every error has a measurable cost, AI is only valuable if the professional maintains control from start to finish.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_AI_in_customs_concretely_changes\"><\/span>What AI in customs concretely changes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For a customs department, augmented customs translates into tangible benefits, measurable on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>Less time spent on entry and research, more time on analysis and control. When data extraction and classification proposals are assisted by AI, the declarer regains time for what constitutes the added value of their profession: verifying, arbitrating, deciding.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer classification or transcription errors, less risk of reassessment. Mechanical errors, a number inversion, an incorrectly reported code, forgotten data do not disappear through willpower or vigilance. They decrease when the entry process changes. AI assistance does not eliminate human error; it reduces the opportunities for it to occur.<\/p>\n<p>Regulatory monitoring that comes to the professional instead of requiring them to seek it out. Rather than consulting multiple sources daily, the declarer is alerted to developments concerning their flows. They remain focused on their operations.<\/p>\n<p>Enhanced traceability of each decision. Who validated what, when, on what basis, with what level of confidence. Regulatory and volumetric pressure affects customs departments of all sizes. An RCR handling 200 lines per day needs assistance as much as an industrial customs department handling 2,000.<\/p>\n<p>And it is not an 18-month transformation project.
